Apologia Physical Science Module 3 Labs
Welcome back!
Today we are learning more about the atmosphere.
Experiment 3.1 Atmospheric Pressure
This experiment is to show that atmosphere actually does exert pressure on everything it touches.
After putting a small amount of water in an aluminum can, place the can in the frying pan on “high” to heat the water.
Fill a bowl with water and ice.
Once the steam starts rising out of each can, using tongs grab the can and place it upside down in the water.
Well, we didn’t get much of a reaction…so, we try it again….
Heating the second time around….
And now for the ice water…. not too much happening again. So, we check out the experiment on youtube and discover that it will indeed work…just not for us.
While our can puckered a bit, it *should* have crumpled significantly.
Experiment 3.2 Seeing the Effect of Changing Temperature
In this experiment we will see what happens to air when its temperature increases.
First ‘chill’ a 2-liter bottle with the cap off in ice water for a few minutes. Then stand the bottle in the bowl and place a balloon on the opening of the bottle. Observe….
Pull the bottle out of the water and set on the counter.
Then put the bottle into some hot water….
Cool!
As the air’s temperature increases, the air expands inflating the balloon…. (and that’s all I’ll say at this point, because, you need to figure out WHY the air expanded and I won’t spoil that….)
